Dear Readers,

Like most of you, I have loved horses from the first time I saw one. (For me this was on television!) I knew somehow, someday, they would become a big part of my life.

Classic Spirit (Spock)For many years, the only way I could be around horses was by reading about them. Many books are available that talk about showing, training, foxhunting, or what happens at a stable among the riders. Since I lived in the city, and couldn't have a pony, it was difficult to imagine a lot of what I read! My favorite book ended up being Black Beauty. Here at last, was a book I that I could understand! After all, Beauty himself tells the reader what is happening in his world.

The Classic Spirit Series (in honor of my jumper, "Spock", who taught me how to REALLY ride!) begins with "What About Me?" The events in the book are true: the ponies are real. To read Spock's Story, click here.

Ranger (Sinatra)In January 2001, I traveled to Texas to look for a few ponies to buy and train for the show ring. From the moment Sinatra approached me, I knew there was something extremely unusual about him. Once he "chose" me, I had to take him home.

During the first six months of our time together, adults and children alike would tell me a "tale" of something they had observed Sinatra doing, or comment on his extraordinary, expressive personality. One day while giving him a bath, he twice picked up a rather large empty bucket with his teeth. Without looking up, I growled at him to put it down, concentrating instead on scrubbing his tail. When he did it a third time, I paid attention. Sinatra picked up the bucket, placed it down, and put his head inside as if to drink. What a silly human I was! I stopped bathing him, and filled the bucket with water. He drank half of it (must have been REALLY thirsty) and when he finished, he licked my face in thanks. The onlookers were astonished, and we all stared at each other shaking our heads. There was no denying that Sinatra had made a clear effort to communicate his need, and show his appreciation. I was very happy to have witnesses---if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, I 'm not sure I would have believed it either! It was in that very moment, I decided to be Sinatra's writer, and tell his stories. Of course, they are told from his point of view!

It doesn't matter if you live in the country or city, own a pony or not, compete, trail ride, or just ride for pleasure---If you LOVE horses, I hope (oops! I mean "WE" hope) you will enjoy reading "What About Me?"
